Gender search tips from Search@Mail.Ru: we know what women think
Moscow, 19th of October, 2010. For the first time in Runet we at Search@Mail.Ru implemented searching tips that consider gender behavior features. Such technology is possible because almost 100% of the users of our search system have e-mail provided my Mail.Ru. While registering electronic address users enter their gender and age and these data is used in depersonalized way to make the service more effective and comfortable.
“We’ve based our searching tips system on the proprietary research results that demonstrated the way users of different gender and age search for information. Next we are going to use social and demographic data of the users to improve quality of our searching system. Tips for the popular search queries for men and women are just a beginning”, says Vladislav Shabanov, project lead for Search@Mail.Ru.
Good examples of this new feature are tips for the query “tour”: for male audience our system suggests tours to Baikal Lake and the USA, as searching statistics show that men are interested in these locations. Suggestions to go to Tunis or Europe for females are based on the same principles. Culinary tips are far more varied: men are suggested with cooking mutton pie, mild-salted cucumbers, thick soup with vegetables and meat or fish broth, while women are shown recipes for manna pie, ramekins and meringue.
Different tip lists are formed for many types of queries, like “TV Show”: girls would get “Ranetki” and “Muneca Brava”, while boys are suggested with “Interns” and “Friends”.
It’s worth mentioning that searching tips are not the only improvement of Search@Mail.Ru this year: we’ve also implemented automatic language change and catching misspellings.
